How To Make Cilantro Green Chutney
- 2 bunches Cilantro, stems included
- 1/2 cup White Vinegar or as much as needed to fully blend
- 1 tsp Garlic, minced
- 1 tsp Ginger
- 1 tsp Salt
- 1/4 cup Walnuts add more for flavor intensity
This simple, 6-ingredient recipe requires very little prep and is ready in under 10 minutes! It can last in the fridge for up to 2 months, if stored in an airtight jar. that being said, if you love it as much as we do it’ll be gone well before then!
The steps for making Cilantro Green Chutney are very simple. Start by rinsing the cilantro and cutting it into large pieces. We use both the leaves and the stems in our recipe. Place into the blender or food processor. Next, add garlic cloves, ginger paste, white vinegar, salt, and walnuts.
For best results, we recommend using fresh or paste garlic and ginger, not ground. Pulse until everything is evenly blended. The key is to avoid over blending it! Chutney should have a slightly coarse, thick texture. If blender appears to be stuck, don’t hesitate to add a little more white vinegar.
And that’s it! We recommend letting it sit uncovered for an hour, to prevent any bubbling. You can serve immediately or store it in the fridge in an airtight jar until ready to use.
Modifications
There are many different variations of Cilantro Green Chutney, however I truly believe you’ll love this version! That being said, you can modify to alter the taste to fit your preference. For example, you can add a small amount of green chili peppers, substitute with apple cider vinegar, or even add a squeeze of lemon juice for extra tanginess.
Tips on Making The Best Chutney
Fresh Cilantro/Ingredients: You always want to use the freshest ingredients possible and that goes double for the cilantro in this recipe. You can’t skimp out on that one because that’s the main ingredient and it will make a massive difference in the quality of your chutney.
Food Processor Highly Recommended: We highly recommend you use a Cuisinart Food Processor but of course any kind will work as long as you can really blend all the ingredients together. Some blenders can’t do it so well so just be aware of which one you’re using and if it’ll blend them correctly.
Add Extra Vinegar if needed: Sometimes your blender will not be able to blend it all correctly so add extra vinegar if you need to and adjust any other ingredients as needed.
What to serve with or Delicious Pairings or Ways to Enjoy
Put this on everything! No, seriously. Our household primarily uses Cilantro Green Chutney as a condiment, a dipping sauce, and a spread. We love eating it with our Afghan White Rice and Beef Korma. However, we don’t limit it to just Afghan dishes. We’ve put it on anything from eggs to pizza. It can also serve as a marinade or salad dressing.
Don’t be afraid to experiment. The chutney will add a boost of flavor to any dish and will quickly become your new favorite condiment.
Storage Recommendations
Refrigeration
Store your cilantro green chutney in a clean and airtight container in the refrigerator. This will ensure that the freshness will be preserved through the cold temperatures. Make sure to use Skroam’s 10 Pack Glass Containers for best results.
Separation
Keep the portions small when storing your chutney away. Keep the bulk of it in a sealed container as it will help minimize air exposure when it gets opened later.
Consider Topping with Oil
A thin layer of oil can help keep the chutney’s vibrant green color. It can act as a protective barrier when it is in its sealed container.
Use a Clean Spoon
It is a must to use a clean spoon when service from the container to avoid contamination.
Freezing
Freezing the chutney will extend its shelf life. But please note that the texture will certainly be affected when you thaw it out later. Maybe use ice trays when you freeze it to help with that!
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
You can typically store this for 1 to 2 weeks depending on the container being used. Make sure to constantly check for any spoilage.
You can freeze it but we recommend freezing it in smaller portions to avoid any weird texture issues. Maybe with like an ice tray!
From what I have researched, I have seen that it helps acting as a protective barrier and keeps the color of the chutney more vibrant as if it was fresh. Olive oil is a good one to use as it’s more neutral in flavor.
Definitely! Add any extra spicy ingredients like spicy chili peppers to your preferred spice level.
Walnuts really add a unique texture and flavor but you can use alternatives such as almonds or cashews!
Sure why not! Could add some great zest to your meat!
You may use any type of vinegar. A popular one is Apple Cider Vinegar which gives it more of a sugary taste. Or Rice Vinegar will work too.
Anything that blends all the ingredients will work great
Definitely!
